8 Reading Habits You Probably Don’t Realize Doing

Posted on Mar 02, 2016 by: Rainy Darono

We read everywhere, whether we realize it or not. Now, that almost everybody has smartphones and/or tablets, getting the latest information is as easy as reaching out to your phone from your pocket or bag. Reading is a something we do every single day, either we’re reading a textbook, an email, a digital magazine or even a blog post, like what you’re doing right now.

Here is a list of 8 reading habits we do without even realizing:

1.       We read before going to sleep

Many people have Nomophobia, which is the fear of being without a mobile device, or beyond mobile phone contact. With the advanced technology and media, we have the tendency of saying good nights to loved ones, update Snapchat, Instagram or tweet before going to sleep.

2.       We do No. 2 and read

According to research, 63 percent people read while in the toilet, and 86 percent of men said toilet was the place they do most reading. Well, there’s no shame of admitting this because a lot of people do it too, right?

3.       We read in bed

When we’re reading a novel, usually we read them in bed at night until our eyes are tired then decided to put the book down and go to sleep. There’s actually an English noun, Librocubicularist, which is a person who reads in bed. Now, you know what to call yourself.

4.       When lazy, we skim through

Scrolling down Facebook or Twitter home page could irritate our eyes because there are so many things, so many posts to read every day. Sometimes, instead of reading those updates, our eyes decide to skim through instead of reading them.

5.       We read; we imagine

Let your right brain does its job. Whether we’re reading a sci-fi novel, a short story, or a featured recipe on a cooking magazine, while we see the images and read those texts, we imagine the plot and setting in our head being real.

6.       We read song lyrics too

When we just gotta find the lyrics of our new favorite song on the radio, we Googled it and read those lyrics over and over until we memorize them, and sing along while the song is playing. Don’t we all do this sometimes?

7.       We mumbles

This may apply to some people; when we are trying to concentrate on an exam and reading those thick textbooks, we tend to mumbles while reading. If your friends hear you, they will be like, “what did he/she just say?”

8.       We make sound when reading foreign language

This is something I found out recently; While trying to read a sentence of a foreign language I am not familiar with, I tend to read it out loud, which I am pretty sure I sound very funny.

Once Dr. Seuss said “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Reading makes us knowledgeable; it also helps with writing skills and broaden our vocabulary.

Never stop reading and never stop learning, and while doing these, let’s start exploring too.
